Paintings because animation is art of action. I spent about 4 years in animation and still draw like my hands are broken. Better to start from basics and then decide what is better fot you.
would recomend starting with a small animation
but decent one
just upload anything and if it dosent pass make it better

Animation, I should think -- because you'll then invest a lot of time and patience into perfecting poses, backgrounds, and all the things that you fundamentally need to do in art. If you're suggesting you have the patience for it, then by all means, do so.
But if not, and you would rather do poster art or single illustrations, then release more artwork.
It's up to you -- what do you want to have seen from your own work in five, ten years' time?
